FOUNDATION

A big pile of documents - including Harlequin newsletters from the earliest days has been delivered. These provide conclusive proof of the date and location of the founding of Harlequins and the the winding up of Halesowen & District:

So this is pretty much conclusive proof of Harlequins' independent foundation - and a suggestion of the date and location of our first training event (22nd April at Kinver)

The proposal to amalgamate HOC with HDOC

Harlequins and Halesowen Orienteering Clubs
Minutes of the Meeting held at Plough and Harrow, Kinver on Monday, 1st December, 1968
1. AMALGAMATION OF CLUBS

It was unanimously agreed by Executive Committee Members from both Clubs that Halesowen Orienteering Club and Harlequins Orienteering Club should formally amalgamate on 13th January, 1969. This move was proposed because of the close geographical proximity of the two clubs and the relatively small numbers in each which tended to reduce the potential for the sport of Orienteering.

2. AGENDA

The Agenda for Meeting of both Clubs to be held 13th January at 8.00 p.m.. at Area Youth Office, High Street, Kinver.
(i) Halesowen and District Orienteering Club will propose dissolution of the club at the A.G.M.
(ii) Halesowen and District members will be invited to join the Harlequins Orienteering Club.
(iii) Election of Officers for the newly formed Harlequins Orienteering Club.
(iv) Any other business.

So here we have both Harlequins and Halesowen existing at the same time, a proposal to dissolve HDOC followed a second proposal inviting former HDOC members to join HOC. This sounds pretty clear cut but wait... Confusingly the enlarged club is referred to as 'newly formed' - as if the intention was this would be a new club - but using the same name as the former HOC.

So the answer is HOC was founded on April 1st at the Area Youth Office, Kinver and strictly according to the minutes HDOC was dissolved and then, the (now former) members of HDOC were invited to join HOC on 19th Jan 1969. So the clubs were not amalgamated.

BUT... Confusingly there were members of HDOC present at the HOC foundation meeting... were these observers? Were they members of both clubs? Who knows? Does it really matter?
